Edward Okeke

Senior Economist & Professor of Policy Analysis · RAND

I am a health and development economist whose research explores the economics of health care delivery, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. I also trained and practiced as a physician — a background that shapes both the questions I ask and the way I interpret the evidence.

My work examines how provider incentives, supply constraints, and early-life interventions shape health outcomes and long-run human capital. My research has been published in the American Economic Review, the Journal of Development Economics, the Journal of Health Economics, Health Affairs, and other leading journals. I am an Affiliated Professor at J-PAL and serve on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Health Economics.

I hold a PhD in Health Policy (Economics) from the University of Michigan and an MD from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria. I am a recipient of the 32nd Kenneth J. Arrow Award (2024), given by the International Health Economics Association for the best published paper in health economics.
